MEMORY LOSS INFORMATION AND SCREENING IS JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY

Memory loss is something that concerns and touches the lives of most elderly people.  Sometimes memory loss occurs in the course of a health problem, such as thyroid disease or vitamin deficiency, and can be reversed as the health problem is treated.  Other times, memory loss is due to an irreversible disease, such as Alzheimer's disease.  According to the Alzheimer's Association, approximately 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and 14 million will be afflicted by 2050 if a cure is not found.

Although there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease at this time, there are medications available that can help people stay alert and active longer than they would without treatment.  Unfortunately, many people overlook memory loss because they mistakenly believe that it is a normal part of aging.  When memory loss goes undetected, people lose the opportunity for early treatment of the disease as well as the opportunity to participate in planning for their futures.

The Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute and Healthcare Technology Systems maintains an automated telephone system that provides:
· general information about memory loss
· a screening tool for memory loss
· support and advice for caregivers of those with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

This system, the Alzheimer's Early Recognition Telephone System (ALERTS) can be accessed by all Wisconsin residents and will link interested callers to their local community services that can assist them.  The call is completely anonymous, totally free, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 1-800-289-4974 today to take advantage of this free service.
