U.S. State Department Urges Citizens
Not to Start Adoptions in Guatemala

In September 2007, the U.S. Department of State posted on it's website a warning to U.S. citizens to avoid beginning Guatemalan adoptions for at least the next six months.  Guatemala has announced it's intention to be Hague Treaty compliant by January 1, 2008, and has indicated that their government will not process adoption cases that do not meet Hague standards after December 31, 2007.  They have also informed the U.S. they will not process adoptions for non-Hague member countries after December 31.  Until U.S. accession to the Hague Convention takes effect, the U.S. is not Hague compliant.  For more information please go to www.travel.state.gov.
